AI for Business: Change What’s Possible
Although 90% of today’s businesses have adopted cloud technology, only one-third are achieving the expected return on investment. The most advanced companies understand that while the cloud gives you next-level computing power and access to new kinds of data in the right quantity and quality, AI is the bridge to transform that data into business value . Not surprisingly, all of the senior executives are now involved in the AI agenda, and they’re asking what’s next.
That’s where applied intelligence comes in. We believe the cloud is the tool , data is the driving force, and artificial intelligence is the differentiator. We bring these together to help you make smarter, faster decisions that will help transform your organization and enable growth — at any scale. And because we understand that people play a key role in the success of any technological transformation, our global team of experts has the cross-functional skills to both deliver business results and facilitate cultural change, enabling your employees to use data and AI responsibly.
What is artificial intelligence?
Artificial intelligence is a collection of many different technologies working together to allow machines to sense, understand, act and learn with a human-like level of intelligence. Maybe that’s why everyone seems to have a different definition of artificial intelligence: AI is not just one thing.
Technologies such as machine learning and natural language processing are part of the AI landscape. Each is evolving in its own way and, when combined with data, analytics and automation, can help companies achieve their goals, whether it’s improving customer service or optimizing the supply chain.
Narrow (or “weak”) AI
Some go even further, defining artificial intelligence as “narrow” and “general” AI. Much of what we encounter in our daily lives is narrow AI that performs a single task or set of closely related tasks. Examples include:
Weather applications
Digital assistants.
Software that analyzes data to optimize a given business function. These systems are powerful, but the playing field is narrow: they tend to focus on driving efficiency. But when properly applied, narrow AI has enormous transformative power and continues to influence the way we work and live globally.
General (or “strong”) AI
General AI is more like what you see in science fiction movies, where intelligent machines mimic human intelligence, think strategically, abstractly and creatively, and are able to solve a range of complex problems. Although machines can perform some tasks better than humans (such as data processing), this fully realized vision of shared AI does not yet exist beyond the movie screen. This is why human-machine collaboration is crucial – in today’s world, artificial intelligence remains an extension of human capabilities, not a replacement for them.
Why is AI important?
Artificial intelligence has long been an expectation in both popular and scientific culture because it can change business as well as the relationship between humans and technology in general. So, why is the use of AI reaching critical mass today?
Because of the proliferation of data and the maturity of other innovations in cloud processing and computing power, AI adoption is growing faster than ever. Companies now have access to an unprecedented amount of data, including dark data they didn’t even know existed. These treasure troves are a boon to AI development.
A critical source of business value – if done right
Artificial Intelligence has long been seen as a potential source of business innovation. Now that the implementation tools are ready, organizations are beginning to see how AI can add value. Automation reduces costs and provides a new level of consistency, speed and scalability to business processes; in fact, some Accenture clients have reported time savings of 70 percent. Even more compelling, however, is AI’s ability to drive growth.
Companies that successfully scale are getting 3 times the return on their AI investments compared to those stuck in the experimental stage. Not surprisingly, 84% of senior executives believe they should use AI to achieve their growth goals.
Flexibility and competitive advantage
Artificial intelligence isn’t just about efficiency and optimizing time-consuming tasks. With machine learning and deep learning, AI applications can learn from data and results in near real time, analyzing new information from many sources and adapting accordingly with an invaluable level of accuracy for business. (Product recommendations are a prime example.) This ability to self-learn and self-optimize means that AI continuously increases the business benefits it creates.
In this way, artificial intelligence helps businesses adapt quickly by providing a regular stream of information to innovate and gain a competitive advantage in a world of constant change. When scaling, AI can be key to realizing your strategic priorities and even a linchpin to survival: Three out of four senior executives believe that if they don’t scale artificial intelligence in the next five years, they risk going out of business entirely. Clearly, the stakes in scaling AI are high.
The benefits of AI
There are many ways to define artificial intelligence, but the more important conversation revolves around what AI allows you to do.
- Cross-cutting efficiency : Artificial intelligence eliminates friction and improves analytics and resource utilization in your organization, resulting in significant cost savings. It can also automate complex processes and minimize downtime by predicting maintenance needs.
- Increased accuracy and decision making : Artificial intelligence complements human intelligence with rich analytics and predictive patterns to improve the quality, efficiency and creativity of employee decisions.
- Intelligent Suggestions . Because machines think differently than humans, they can discover gaps and opportunities in the marketplace faster, helping you introduce new products, services, channels and business models with unprecedented levels of speed and quality.
- Empowered employees: AI can take care of routine tasks while employees spend time on more important tasks. By fundamentally changing the way work is done and reinforcing the role of humans in driving growth, AI is predicted to increase productivity. Using AI can also unlock the incredible potential of talent with disabilities, helping all workers thrive.
- Superior customer service: Continuous machine learning provides a constant stream of comprehensive customer information for hyper-personalization. From 24/7 chatbots to faster helpdesk routing, businesses can use artificial intelligence to gather real-time information and deliver high-performance interactions that drive growth, employee retention and overall satisfaction.
AI is used in many different ways, but the prevailing truth is that your AI strategy is your business strategy. To maximize the ROI of your AI investment, prioritize your business and then determine how AI can help.
Determine the value of your business
There are countless ways to use AI. How do organizations decide what to focus on? To scale successfully, start by determining the value to your business. Then evaluate and prioritize different AI applications against those strategic goals.
Redesign your workforce
The growing momentum of AI requires a diverse, reconfigured workforce to support and scale it. Despite early fears that artificial intelligence and automation will lead to job losses, the future of AI depends on human-machine collaboration and the need to change talents and ways of working.
Creating a governance and ethical framework
Organizations must develop their AI strategy with trust in mind. This means creating the right governance structures and ensuring that ethical principles are put into practice when developing algorithms and software.
Successfully applying these factors can help organizations unlock exponential value and remain competitive. AI is no longer just “nice to have,” but is critical to the future of business.
